Decided to take the Mustang out today to stretch its legs. So while I was out doing errands I snapped this photo and thought I would try the Android app, Blogger. So this post is totaly from my phone.

If I like the way it looks I will be able to post from locations such as the drag strip or from car shows. It comes with some polish and a Mothers ball thingie that fits on a drill. It also has some small sandpaper at 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit. I worked on Nancy's car first and used up the paper so I went out and got all four of those grits of wet sanding paper to do my car. You start by taping off the painted parts of the car so you don't sand any paint off. I used that low tack blue painters tape. Then I started out with 800 girt and just sanded in a north / south motion. I went with an east / west motion when I went to the 1000 grit, and alternated with the 1500 and 2000 grits. I finished off with the Mothers polish and the ball on a drill. They turned out really well. You can tell the age on the side markers, some micro cracks, but they are really clear now. Makes a huge difference when driving at night.

I may end up getting new Cobra clear lights and markers along with some trick switchback LED side lights, but for now this is a good fix.

New Shoes & Handling Package

I picked up some wheels and tires. The wheels are 18" x 9" Black Bullitt Wheels. I got them used from Prestige Mustangs. Prestige Mustangs is a Mustang salvage yard. They have tons of Mustang parts and I went out to Monroe to see if they had any wheels that I'd like. They had this set with a really good set of Nexen N3000 tires for $699. Prestige Mustangs use to be in Clarkston GA less than a mile from where I live. Now it's a 50 mile drive to go see them, but it's worth the drive! I love the contrast of the black wheels on a silver car so I'm very happy with how my GT looks.

The M-5400-A 'Bullitt Handling Package' is installed and the car rides so much better! The handling has improved as well. The car does not wiggle around on an off ramp any more and the car just has a much more predictable feel to it. I think this was a huge upgrade for my car. It has lowered the car about an inch and has taken away that 4X4 look that the stock SN95's have. I'm told that it takes awhile for the springs to settle and it might drop a tad more. I did not go with an after-market caster / camber plate since they were able to align the car to factory specs without it. I'm guessing this is because I used a Ford Racing kit. With other lowering springs you have to get a cc plate to get it to align correctly.

I drove it around town a bunch today and the car just feels great! Now I have to get it cleaned up and waxed to get ready for the SilverMustangs.com cruise that is coming next Saturday May 21st.

M-5400-A Performance Handling Kit

Well, today I drove down to Gene Evans Team Ford and picked up the 'Bullitt Handling' kit. This kit comes with front and rear coils springs, front Tokico struts, rear Tokico shocks plus front and rear sway bars. This kit lists for $545.00, but gefracing.com had them on sale for $469.20 and had it in stock! The parts guy I talked to was Rick Stark. He was more than helpful and a nice guy to chat with while I waited on my kit to come over from their warehouse. I'm sure they have not seen the last of me!

Since I'm going to install a handling kit instead of the 4 cyl Fox springs and Lakewood drag struts and shocks, my build is being modified a touch. I have sold my F-150, it is going to a good home with my brother. So I now just have my daily driver and my Mustang. I have decided to to go in a milder direction than making a full on street / strip drag car. I want to be able to drive my Mustang in the rain and for normal driving if my daily driver is in the shop.

I looked up the stats on the 2001 Mustang Bullitt GT and stock it does 0-60 in 5.5 sec. and the quarter mile in 14 flat on street tires. My goal is still to have a 12 second mustang and I'm sure I can do it with this kit setup. I will need more power and some better gears, but I don't think it will be out of reach by using this suspension setup.

So now I will have two sets of wheels and tires. One set for handling and running around with, rain or shine and the other set is my Summit Star 15" big and little wheels and tires. With my 15x8 Summit Star wheel I can now go with the MT ET Street radial tire that is super sticky and head for the track, as long as it's not going to rain!

I will keep the updates coming as I get the parts installed.

It's about time!

Well, I'm done! The Mustang is now in the garage. My biggest hurdle to doing this was a very large and obsolete Durst 10x10 enlarger and some other darkroom equipment. I started working on cleaning out the garage last week, and took a truckload of junk to the dump. I met a man there that recycles metal and he told me that he would come and pick up any metal I had for free! I took him up on it so he came by and took the stuff on Friday. I have been working on the garage until now (Sunday) to get it cleaned out so I can put my Mustang in there.

It has been a long time since my garage was able to hold a car, I'm happy it is done.

Update

The above silver Mustang is not mine. It belongs to the fine folks at MPE Racing. I posted it as a motivational tool to keep me focused on my project and it is one fine looking SN95!

I have not posted in quite awhile. Mostly because I have not done anything to my Mustang since the fuel pump upgrade / repair. I have been out of work for 2 years, so no funds equals no mods equals no updates. As I said, I have not done anything to my Mustang so why the update? Well, I'm starting to work once again and as I build my bank account back up I'll start to get back to work on my project car. I really just wanted to post an update so anyone out there that is following this project will now know that I have not abandoned it, put on hold for a bit, but not abandoned.

So, for now enjoy the photo and I'll get back to work on getting my project back on track.

SVT Ford Focus Fuel Pump

My old fuel pump died so since I had to replace it I decided to upgrade to the SVT Focus pump. The SVT pump delivers enough fuel to support up to 400 rear wheel horsepower and is plug-n-play with my 1998 GT. I could not use the top or the sender unit, but I did use the new basket, pump and filters with my old '98 top and sender unit.

The old pump decided to die on me with a full tank of gas. So doing this repair solo was quite a chore. Some repairs go as planed with just a stubborn bolt or nut here and there. This repair / mod fought me each step of the way. On top of that the weather was hot and muggy.

The 1998 is kind of an oddball year for the Mustang. It has a fuel tank that was just used for that year and is a return system with a return-less pump. After researching the web for info on this upgrade I had to put together all kinds of info from multiple web pages to make sure I was doing everything right.

After fighting with this repair / mod I finely got the tank back in and with everything buttoned up I turned the key, heard the pump come on, waited a few seconds and fired it up. It started right up, I did not get a 'Check Engine Light' and my sender unit is sending the correct info to my fuel gauge.

It was a pain to do the repair, but I learned a bunch and I now have fuel support for any mods I do down the road. Plus I get to drive my Mustang since it has been sitting while I got the funds to buy the pump.

Nexen 165/80r15

I have ordered the Nexen tires I need for the 15" x 4" Summit wheels. Funds are tight, but these were on sale so I grabbed a pair for my project car. The front wheels and tires are taken care of, I'm going to have to save my pennies for the rear tires now. I'm going to go with a P 275 /50R15 size tire for the rear. I'm still waffling on which tire to buy. The two I'm looking at are the Mickey Thompson ET Street radial and the BFGoodrich T/A Drag Radial. From what I have read so far, the M/T ETs hook better than the BFGs, but the BFGs last longer. Since my car is way underpowered right now I'm guessing that how the tire hooks will not matter as much at my power level. So I'm leaning toward the BFGs, but I'm still researching both tires. I have read that the NMRA (National Mustang Racing Association) Factory Stock 2 valve guys run on the BFG drag radials and they are in the deep 11 second range.

Another note, still working on the garage so I can get my baby out of the weather and work on it. I know, I'm slack. I'll try and do more out there since the weather is getting nicer.

Summit Fast-Five Wheels

I have both front and back wheels now. They are the Summit Stars, or what Summit calls Fast-Five wheels. The fronts are 15x4 and the rears are 15x8. Now I have to get tires. I'm going to be putting on the M/T ET Street Radial P 275 /50R15 on the back. I'm having problems finding front tires. Since the wheel is only 4 inches wide the tire size is 165/80TR15, which were used on the old VW Bug. I have found two different tires that will work, one is made by Nexen and the other is made by Kuhmo. I'll have to check next week at Dekalb Tire to see if I can get them ordered.

I'm working on cleaning out the garage to put the car in there so I can work on it this winter. Plus it gets it out of the weather. I'm back on track on what I want to do with the car. I flirted with making it a road racer, but after I saw how much it cost to race I have decided to keep it on the road. The cost of just one 45 min. road race is what it will cost to keep the car insured and on the road for a year. Plus after looking at the spec. the tire they have to run cost $836 for a set. I think I'm just going to stick with something I can cruise around with and take to the drag strip once and awhile.

Since I'm going to be working on it more this winter I promise I'll keep the blog updated more often. First up will be cleaning out the garage and I have made a huge dent in that area. I hope to have the Mustang in there by next weekend. I'll keep you posted....

Street Machine

Well, my project car will be going into my garage this winter. I'm going to build a car that I will show at parking lot shows, you know the ones, where you sit by your car in a lawn chair and lie about it. I'm also going to drag race it mainly at test and tunes. I wanted to go hardcore and just build a full on race car, but I really just want to enjoy it by cruising hanging out at shows with fellow gear heads and taking it to the strip every now and then to see what my mods have gotten me. So right now I'll be doing the cheap stuff first, making the car lighter by taking out the rear seat, radio and speakers, things like that. My seats will be going into my wife's 1998 white V6 convertible Mustang. Her interior has seen better days and mine is in great shape. So since I'm taking off as much weight as I can I'll be reusing what I can in her car.

She will need some tires soon, so I'll give her my 17" wheels with the nearly new tires and buy the Summit wheels that I talked about in the post below. I'll start out with the Mickey Thompson ET radials on the back while and some skinny tires up front. So I'll be working on the suspension first. I'll be using the springs that I talked about in the post below along with the Lakwood 90/10 struts for the front and the Lakwood 50/50 for the rear.

As far as the engine I'm using my SVO intake, adding a Steeda timing adjuster, PI cams and a X-Pipe. After all that I'll have to get it dyno tuned with my Diablo tuner.

So that is it for now, just a quick update on what I'm going to do with the Mustang. Until then here is a nice photo of an SVO intake.

Econo Drag Springs

It has been awhile since I last updated my Project Blog. I have been laid off from work and have been looking for another job. So the funds are tight and I have not done anything to the Mustang in months. So this update I'm adding something cheap. Used Mustang springs. I went over to Prestige Mustang and got a set of springs. The fronts are from a Fox body 4 cylinder car and the rears are from a Fox body 8 cylinder car. This is an old Mustang drag racing trick. The front springs will lift on acceleration transferring weight to the rears. I know that this will hurt handling as the front end gets mushy from the softer springs, but this is a non-daily driver project strip / street car. I'm going for a muscle car look and ride something along the lines of this:
I also plan on going with wheels like the ones in the photo. Those are the Weld Prostars, I think I'm going to go with the Summit Stars from Summit Racing. The first step toward all of this is the springs, which I have now. The next step will be getting SN95 Strange adjustable struts and shocks along with some kind of upper and lower control arms and lastly the wheels and tires.

I'll be doing this as funds allow, so it might take longer than I'd like. The project is coming together well enough. Once all the above mods are done I'll have the supenstion done then I can work on the last two parts before I hit the track. The last two parts will be adding a 4:30 rear gear along with beefing up the rear end. Then the last phase will be the engine and for right now I'm thinking I'm going to go with just a PI head swap and some shorty headers. While I'm stashing away my funds for all this modding I'll be doing the cheap stuff like making the car lighter. I'll post more on that as I go. I'm excited that I have a direction to head toward.

Ford Racing Flywheel, Clutch and Driveshaft

Project Mustang has been idle for a couple of months because it was in need of a clutch. I knew when I got the car that the clutch was iffy and as the summer wore on so did the clutch. Summit Racing and Mustangs Unlimited to the rescue. I picked up the Ford racing nodular iron flywheel and Ford racing 'King Cobra' clutch at Mustangs Unlimited. The Ford racing aluminum driveshaft and Lakewood universal joints at Summit Racing. My trusty mechanics at #1 Decatur Pro installed the parts for me. Huge difference! The clutch engages right off the floor and grabs hard. My old clutch was worn out and I knew it was time to replace it when it would only engage at the very top of pedal travel. The clutch feel is a lot different and it will take some time getting use to this new setup. In fact I stalled the car a few times while getting use to the new pedal feel. When I bang second I get a nice chirp out of the rear tires and was happy to hear and feel that on the driver side rear. It seems the posi traction is working just fine! With all new parts and it being installed correctly, the drivetrain seems very tight and seems to spin up faster. Not a huge difference in the way the car accelerates, except it has a very solid feel to it. This was more of a maintainace mod and not much of a performance mod. Hopefully my next mod with be more in the performance vain, rear gears (4.30) for example. Stay tuned.

SVO Intake

I have been going over how I wanted to build my engine. I have so many options, 4.6 2 valve, 4.6 4 valve like the Cobra engines, 5.4 2 or 4 valve. I could go with turbos, roots blower or a Vortech blower. Well, I just picked up an SVO intake manifold so I'm going to be building a 4.6 2V. Ford came out with the SVO intake manifold along with the SVO 2 valve heads in 1998. The 4.6 2v heads and intake for the '96 through '98 were dogs. It's one of the reasons these model years are looked down upon. In 1999 Ford came out with the 2v PI heads, PI standing for performance improved. It took the power of the 4.6 2v up to 260 HP from 215 for the non-PI heads. The SVO parts were made to help the underpowered SN95 Mustangs. The intake manifold was not around long. Ford came out with the Bullitt intake for their 2001 Bullitt Mustang. The Bullitt intake is similar to the SVO, it just works with the PI heads. The SVO heads are still being made and they are the best flowing 2 valve heads you can put on a modular 4.6. So my plan now is to build a 2v SVO engine with no power adder, all N/A (naturally aspirated). With cams, long tube headers and the normal bolt ons I should see around 300 HP at the wheels. This intake is very hard to find because the Ford Factory Stock racers snapped them all up for their race cars. I got really lucky and did a Google search for them and found them up in Cartersville GA at a place called, Modular PowerHouse, or MPH. They are a great bunch of guys that love to hot rod Mustangs. I have a feeling that they will be seeing a lot of me!

SVO Intake photos

LED Gauge Cluster Light Mod

Click the photo for a larger view.... I found the LED gauge cluster mod at this link. The instructions are great and Trey did a fantastic job on this writeup. If you follow his instructions this mod is very easy. I first did this to my wife's 1998 v6 convertible. It took me longer because some of the parts are different than what is in his writeup. Today I did my GT and it only took two hours and I was taking my time. I also had to polish my gauge cluster so that took some extra time. You can get the bulbs here. Just do a search for WLED-R5. The cost is not so bad, $2.99 plus .95 cents for the cool white version. You need 7 bulbs, two for the HVAC cluster and 5 for the gauge cluster. My gauge cluster was a tad dim and when I found Trey's writeup over at my other hangout, sn95forums.com, I thought I'd give it a try. Wow, I love the way it looks now, brighter and a nice cool blue. The blue is from a film that Ford puts behind the gauge so the warm yellow old bulbs would make the gauge glow greenish. With the cool white it has a very nice blue glow that I like very much. I'm very happy I found Trey's writeup and if you do this mod please send him a message to thank him.

LED Gauge Cluster Light Mod part II

<img style="cursor: pointer; I forgot to mention that I also replaced both four tower coil packs with the MSD four tower blaster coil packs. The sales copy says: "These new coils from MSD are designed to be bolt-in replacements for OEM coils but with a hotter spark that improves performance. They are designed with better materials and windings to help burn the fuel mixture more efficiently which results in a smoother idle and more mid range power." They were easy to bolt in, four bolts per coil pack, unplug the coil connector put wires back in the correct place and you are good to go. I did notice a much smoother idle and no stumbling in 5th gear with the cruise control on. After all this work the GT idles better, accelerates smoother and is smoother in cruise control at low RPMs. So I'm very happy with the results. I got the plugs and coil packs at Mustangs Unlimited and the Ford Racing 9mm plug wires at Summit Racing.

Spark Plugs & Wire

Since I have only had the car 6 weeks now, I thought it would be a good idea to change the plugs and wires. I did not want to go crazy yet and get some super expensive plug so I just ended up getting the Motorcraft Platinum plugs. I also installed new plug wires, the Ford Racing Blue 9mm wires. I'm glad I did this because when I took out the old plugs they looked in rough shape and there were two plugs that were different than the rest of the plugs that I took out. Six plugs were Splitfire and the number 3 and 4 cylinder had very bad looking Bosh Platinum plugs. I always like to start with the hardest plugs to reach first so that means the passenger side of the engine. I had to take off the K&N cold air induction tube and unplug two fuel injectors. I started with #4 it was Bosh, then #3 same thing Bosh. So the last person that changed the plugs did not do #4 or #3 because they are the hardest to change. All the rest of the plugs were the Splitfire. I'm heading out now to see how the thing runs. It fired up and idled nicely, now to see how it is on the road.

Cleaning the MAF

The GT had thrown some some error codes and the idle was a tad rough so I thought it was a good time to do some tune up items. I went to this link and followed the instructions on cleaning the MAF. Keeping the wires clean is important if your computer is going to get a correct reading on the amount of air that is coming into the intake. I have a K&N cold air induction and I had just cleaned and oiled the filter element. The info at the link above said that the oil from the filter can coat the wires and skew the signal reading. They looked clean, but I wanted to make sure. I just hit them with a blast of quick drying contact cleaner and let them air dry before I put the whole thing back together.

Zaino

This past weekend I used four different Zaino products on my car. I started with the Z-PC polishing compound that you don't use all the time, just when you want to get a glass smooth base and take off the stuff that is stuck in your paint. Then I used their all in one wax, Z-AIO which is a polish, wax and leaves a protective layer. The next step is the clear seal, Z-CS that you rub on and walk away, no buffing. It self levels to leave another UV protective layer to protect your paint. Then after 12 hours I topped it all off with Z-8 Grand Finale Spray Seal. The car is now as smooth as glass and looks great. It is amazing what this product has done for the original ten year old paint! Photos are below. type='text'>Ford PATS Key

When I got my car it only had one key and no fob. Fobs I can get off ebay cheap, I guess I'll have to get a key blank there also. Ford has a security system called PATS that uses a computer chip / transponder in your key. The car's computer won't start the car unless the chip talks it. My car was made in 08/98 so that makes it a late '98 which is a bad thing if you only have one key. With two keys I could get a blank cut and follow a process that will program that other key. Since I only have one key I have to get another one made.

At lunch Friday I went by Tim Stewart Ford Lincoln Mercury at 5675 Peachetree Industrial Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30341 and went to the parts department to have a key made. They told me it was $45 for the key and $90 to program it for my car. I'm not going to pay $135 for a key! So I'll have to call around to independent locksmiths or find a way to defeat the PATS systems so I can us a normal skinny $1.25 home depot key.

I have also read that some Ford dealers will not rape you for the cost on programing your key. If that is so then shame on you Tim Stewart Ford Lincoln Mercury!

Steeda Underdrive Pulleys part II

The underdrive pulleys are installed! I started on Friday night and the first problem I ran into was the radiator fan would not allow me to get my impact wrench square on the crank pulley bolt. I took the radiator overflow tank off, then the radiator fan. The crank pulley did not want to budge so I sprayed some Teflon penetrating oil spray on it and the other nuts to let them soak overnight. This morning I put the impact wrench back on the crank nut pulley and it broke loose right away. Also loosened the other nuts required for this install.

It took me a total of 3 hours for this install. I took my time, that is the nice thing about working on a car that is not your daily driver, no real rush to get it done. After I put it all back together I fired it up and watched the belt for any wobbles. It tracked true, so I went in, washed up and took the GT for a spin.

I noticed the engine wants to rev. freer and it had a tad more pull over my last mod. I could feel more power, just not as much as what the Diablo performance tune gave me. The old harmonic balancer was looking ratty so this mod made sense for a performance and maintenance standpoint. A win / win if you ask me!

Below are the photos of the install. The first is of the crank pulley puller that I got at O'Reilly Auto Parts, it was $14.99 and it worked great! The second photo is of both set of pulleys, the factory set is on the left. The third photo is the engine getting ready for the new pulleys and the forth is the completed install. All and all this mod was worth the money and time it took to install.

<img width='1' height='1' I drove down to Summit Racing again this weekend to look at tuners. They had two for the Mustang GT. The Diablo that I ended up buying and the Granatelli Fuego Flash Tuner. The thing that I did like about the Granatelli was the fact that you can use it on up to six Ford vehicles and their website said it will datalog. Well, after doing some research on the web I had seen nothing but negative reviews about that tuner. To sum up what I had read was this gem of a quote: " DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON GMS.. That tuner is craptastic.." So after looking at both, I will have to say that the build quality was better on the Diablo. It was a little more money and you can only use it for one vehicle, but most of the reviews I had read online were positive. Plus there are two shops that are close by that will make custom tunes once I have an engine that is modified enough to warrant a dyno tune.

I am aware of another quality tuner out there for the Mustangs and that would be the SCT SF3 Power Flash. I have also heard nothing but good things about SCT, but while reading their manual I came across this: "X3 Power Flash VIN locks to a single vehicle. You cannot use the device to tune a new or different vehicle, until you have returned the original vehicle back to stock, which will unlock the device. You can only change vehicles 5 times before the unit is permanently locked." With the Diablo tuner you can change to any number of vehicles, you just have to put back the stock program before you move on to another vehicle. That right there knocked SCT out of the running for me. Now it looks like the new SCT LiveWire tuner does not have the 5 vehicle limit, but it is way out of my price range.

After I got it home, I went to The Diablo website and downloaded the software and the updates for this tuner. The instructions were great and the process was painless. Another neat feature is using this hand held tuner to do 'check engine' diagnostics. It reads the fault codes from your OBDII port and if your 'check engine' light is on it will list the fault codes with explanations. After you read those fault codes then you can clear them and turn off the 'check engine' light. My check engine light has been coming on every now and then and by checking the codes they are more from the light mods I have on my car (cat back FlowMasters and K&N cold air induction). A custom tune will take care of these.

After I cleared my fault codes I went for a drive so I could burn up some of the last bits of gas I had in my tank. I know, it's tough to HAVE to drive your car around burning up gas! The reason to empty the tank was so I could fill it with 93 octane fuel. The Diablo Performance tune requires 93 octane. I filled up the tank and headed home to flash the computer with the Diablo Performance tune. This took maybe 5 minutes tops and was very easy because of the excellent menu on the tuner. After it was done, I unhooked the tuner from the OBDII port and fired up the GT. As soon as I hit the street I could tell a difference on how my Mustang now accelerates, it has more power lower in the RPM range. When I took it on the freeway ramp and stomped on it, there was a noticeable difference on how hard the car pulled down the ramp. I was all smiles!

I'm very happy with this tuner. I have just scratched the surface on what it can do, but for now it has helped my project car move down the road a little faster. As I add more mods I'll be able to use it to upgrade my tune to keep up with my modifications. Another good weekend upgrade!

Oh, I'm still waiting on the Steeda underdrive pulleys. Called Mustangs Unlimited and they said that the order should be in by the 10th of June.

Steeda UnderDrive Pulleys

I cruised up to Mustangs Unlimited today to get a set of underdrive pulleys. At first I got a set of BBK billet, but when I got home I saw that the crank pulley was a piggy back type, not a whole pulley, but something I had to put together with a part of the factory crank pulley that I was taking off. I did not like that idea so I took them back. I placed and order for these and paid the difference. They were not in stock so I'll have to wait for them to call me when they come in. I'll update the blog with some photos once I'm done with the install.

I also did some research when I got home and got this info from the All Ford Mustangs site. Looks like I made the right move by going with the Steeda. I have a feeling that they are going to be seeing a bunch of me.
http://www.prestigemustang.com/

Another Mustang parts place that is close to me is Mustangs Unlimited. I found a very clean 1998 Silver Mustang GT. It has the original 4.6 L 2V engine. The car also has a 5 speed and just two modifications, a K&N cold air tube and a pair of FlowMaster mufflers. The interior is black leather which is in great shape. The body is straight, the car tracks true and there does not seem to be any major mechanical problems. I did take it to a shop where they do work for me on my other cars. The muffler brackets were loose so one of the pipes were rubbing on the rear sway bar and they found a leak from the water pump. I had them repair those problems and put in a 180 degree thermostat. This will not be a daily driver. Right now I'm driving it back and forth from work to get a feel on how the car handles and to see if any other problems pop up that the guys back at the shop might have missed.

The purpose of this blog is to document this project. I'm doing this to keep track on what I have done and to help keep the project on track by giving myself goals. The main goal is listed in the header of this blog. I want make a Mustang that run 12 seconds at the dragstrip on street tires, well, at least on drag radials.

So if you are interested in the documentation of the building of a hot rod and to see what works and what does not, just keep an eye on this blog.
